A high-risk country In Amatrice, the belltower of the 15th Century Church of Sant'Agostino collapsed. It had been damaged by the first of the earthquakes which struck the mountainous centre of the country between August and October last year. Most of those who died in that quake were in Amatrice, a beauty spot which was packed with holidaymakers at the height of the summer season. Two further quakes rattled the region in October, with the most powerful measuring 6.5 magnitude. Amatrice mayor Sergio Pirozzi cursed his town's bad luck. "I don't know if we did something bad. That's what I have been asking since yesterday. We have got up to two metres of snow and now another earthquake!" Stefano Petrucci, mayor of nearby Accumoli, said roads were unpassable and bemoaned a shortage of clearance trucks.

He said the army's presence in the affected area would be stepped up. The tremors were felt across the Abruzzo, Lazio and Marche regions and powerfully enough in Rome, over 100km away to send some panicked parents scrambling to schools to collect their children. Centuries-old papal palaces in the capital showcased the mastery of their Renaissance architects by swaying gently to absorb the tremors. Train services on some mainlines and the Rome underground were briefly suspended but resumed after safety checks. Some schools in Rome and all those open in the quake zones were evacuated. Residents of the city of Aquila, where over 300 people died in a 2009 earthquake, rushed into the snow-covered streets in scenes of panic but the mayor said there had been no building collapses there. He loves the big events. After a slight hiatus in the season for him by his standards, he will be keyed up for this. I talked to him about his 20 15th championship, and he crashed out in the last 32 of the World Championship.

Hope is a big part of my being. There's a wall between me and the people who are throwing rocks, and it's glass. They're throwing rocks at the Constitution, and we have to be strong enough to turn them back. At 94, still working on his own version of how to “make America great again,” he asks some provocative questions about the Military-Industrial Complex, which has continued to grow like a strangling weed around democracy. Today, on the 56th anniversary of former General and President Dwight Eisenhower’s unprecedented warning about the threat of uncontrolled militarism, Lear’s call to action has never been more timely. We’re pleased to have Norman as a reader and supporter of WhoWhatWhy. Introduction by Russ Baker, Editor in Chief. ****** Dear Who What and Why: I have a WHY for you. And a bit of a challenge, too. First, a bit of biography: I served in the 15th Air Force in WW II, in a B-17 bomber, out of Foggia, Italy.

Notice, I write girlfriend and not friend. She had invited me to a girlfriend party in January on the evening of the Golden Globes. She is a Los Angeles gal, but lives in Chicago six months of the year with her husband, a Chicagoan. We share both an address and a friendship. Fast forward to now - January 15th. The party was last Sunday evening. I knew I was Sue's newest girlfriend that night and it made me happy. Having lived in various locations throughout my life, I have always been the newest friend or girlfriend on everyone's list. Over the past few days I have been thinking about you, dear readers, who have lifelong girlfriends. Notice again I said girlfriends and not friends. You are very fortunate. Having shared lifelong joys and sorrows with one another throughout life. You have a bond and a history. Your small group is a sisterhood and your girlfriends are your sisters.

The American Jewish Congress stands opposed to the Paris Peace Conference led by France on January 15th and the possibility of any further untoward one-sided and anti-Israel resolutions at the UN Security Council meeting set two days later on January 17th. We also support the decision taken by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to attend the summit. The way the outgoing Obama administration has acted in its final weeks in office, allowing the adoption of the anti-Israel resolution by the Security Council on December 23rd, 2016, has given the impression that this summit and subsequent Security Council meeting will be biased against Israel. President Obama is continuing to use his final days in office to wrongly influence the peace process. It is a long-standing convention that an outgoing administration does not take it upon themselves to make major policy changes in the lead up to the inauguration of their successor.

Ryan didn't have quite as much drama involved with his team's win on Saturday. The Falcons essentially thumped the Seattle Seahawks into submission, winning the game 36-20. Ryan sliced through the vaunted Seahawks defense for 338 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He was 26-of-37 on the afternoon. While the Packers defense has shown improvement over the past couple of months, it's going to be difficult to actually contain Ryan, Julio Jones , Taylor Gabriel and the rest of the Falcons offense. As a team, Pro Football Focus rates the Packers just 15th in overall defense. This means Green Bay may be better off trying to match points with Atlanta. The good news is the Packers may have the benefit of a Jordy Nelson return. The speedy wideout was responsible for 1,257 yards and 14 touchdowns during the regular season but was unavailable against the Cowboys because of broken ribs.

Second, Israel rightly felt that its own concerns were ignored in convening the conference, which the Israeli prime minister called "futile" and "rigged." Antagonizing and isolating one of the two principal parties to the conflict from the get-go is not a strategy for success. Third, it was not lost on the incoming U.S. Administration that this conference took place exactly five days before the transfer of power in Washington. President-elect Trump and his team didn't hide their objections to the gathering. It is very possible that there will be some form of "payback" after January 20th, when the international community has to come to grips with the fact that the U.S. is the one indispensable player in advancing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and may have a long memory about what occurred on January 15th. Fourth, France didn't help its own quest to be an "honest broker" in the conflict.
