The original medieval overhead candle holder is a brilliant piece of form follows function. We were thrilled to uncover original documentation, and even sketches, of a design meeting from the Middle Ages concerning the development of this object. Industrial designers Marcus Chandelier and Phil Ips worked as lighting designers in the court of a European King sometime in the late 14th/early 15th centuries. Here is the transcript and sketches: The Design Brief Royal Messenger: Okay, the King says he wants you guys to design a new form of lighting. He wants to be able to light up the Great Hall after sundown. Phil Ips: We already have lighting in there; remember all of those wall sconces we designed? Royal Messenger: Those only provide lighting near the walls. His Grace wants lighting in the center of the room. Phil Ips: So put more candelabras on the table.

ONE of the odder pieces of evidence turned up by investigations of Javier Duarte, a former governor of the state of Veracruz, was an exercise book with his wife’s scrawl. “ Sí merezco abundancia ” (“Yes I deserve wealth”), she had written, over and over. During six years in charge of the state on the Gulf of Mexico, Mr Duarte allegedly did his best to acquire it. He was arrested at a resort in Guatemala on April 15th, after six months on the run. Five days earlier Tomás Yarrington, an ex-governor of the northern state of Tamaulipas, was nabbed in Florence, Italy. He had been eluding justice for five years. The two fugitive governors are both former members of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to which Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, belongs. The attorney-general has investigated at least 11 state governors since 2010, nine of them from the PRI.

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols drove in Mike Trout in the fourth inning of Monday's contest against the Toronto Blue Jays, tying the game at one apiece. The Angels went on to win the game 2-1, but Pujols' RBI had a little more significance in this instance. It marked his 1,833rd career RBI, tying him with Dave Winfield for the 17th-most in MLB history, per Sportsnet Stats . However, Winfield played in 22 different seasons, while Pujols is just in his 17th professional campaign. Once the veteran collects another RBI, it won't take long for him to move further up the leaderboard. Pujols sits just two behind Rafael Palmeiro for 16th on the list and three behind Ken Griffey for 15th. Assuming he remains healthy, The Machine should rise to 12th in the rankings at a minimum. He could also stand a chance at moving even higher on the list to catch the likes of Willie Mays (1,903), Eddie Murray (1,917) and Jimmie Foxx (1,922) to crack the top nine.

Russian scholars have been making headway in deciphering the pages of the mysterious medieval text. The enigmatic codex, which was first discovered in an Italian monastery by book dealer Wilfrid Voynich back in 1912, contains 240 pages of strange, indecipherable characters and images. Written on fine calfskin parchment, the book has been dated back to the 15th century however all efforts to derive meaning from its contents have so far resulted in failure and frustration. A solution to this mystery has remained so elusive in fact that some researchers believe that the manuscript was actually created as a hoax designed to fool 15th century book collectors. Now though, a team of scientists at the RAS Institute of Applied Mathematics in Russia have determined through statistical analysis that 60% of the book is actually written in two languages English and German and that all the vowels and spaces have been deliberately removed.
