Friday on NBC News coverage of the inauguration of the 45th president of the United States, President Donald J. Trump, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd said Trumps speech was surprisingly divisive for an inaugural address. Todd said, I have to say, it was surprisingly divisive for an inaugural address. I say it this way, we said it was a challenge when youre elected as an outsider, youre elected as a populist and you are channeling what was real anger out there with his supporters. Its tough to be both a unifier and that populace carrier. He went with populism and I think its going to play well with his folks, but that was not the inaugural address that was intended to bring this country together. He added, America first. There was a point there, Lester, where it felt as if he almost was insulting every living president that was sitting next to him in very personal ways.

Instead, he continued the themes from his campaign. I thought this speech was call to arms rather than an appeal for unity. It was a populous message that got him to the presidency, tough language about eliminating the American carnage, talking about eliminating from the face of the Earth radical Islamic extremism. It was a call to arms,” CBSCharlie Rose said. What you saw there today, in that inaugural address, is why he won this election,” Fox News Chief White House Correspondent John Roberts said. I have to say, it was surprisingly divisive for an inaugural address, and I say it this way. We said it was a challenge when you're elected as an outsider. You're elected as a populace, and you’re channeling what was real anger out there with his supporters. It is tough to be both a unifier and that populace carrier,” said NBC’s Chuck Todd.

After a campaign defined by the size of his personality, President Donald Trump finally found a room he could not fill. That's not to say that he couldn't draw a crowd. The masses assembled for the inauguration of the 45th president looked plenty vast on TV. (And, anyway, a debate about numbers with a new President who was convinced he was on NBC's number-one show long after its ratings slid is not a debate worth having.) As television, the inauguration showed the degree to which Trump dims in voltage when alienated from the particular tools of his trade. A persona that lit up the stage during debates, arena rallies, and press conferences looked overmatched by this occasion. Trump, after all, is TV star whose power and charisma comes from his showman-like willingness to sow chaos . The inauguration is a stage show defined by its rigorous adherence to formula, and so Trump seemed less vivid.

The new president was to deliver an inaugural address lasting about 20 minutes centered on the campaign themes that he used in his improbable November election victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton. Clinton attended the ceremony with her husband, former President Bill Clinton. It will be optimistic. It will be visionary, but it's going to be philosophical, his spokesman, Sean Spicer, said of the speech, speaking to NBC on Friday morning. Trump, 70, takes over a country divided after a bitter election campaign. A wealthy New York businessman and former reality TV star, he will set the country on a new, uncertain path at home and abroad. President-elect Donald Trumps incoming counselor and close aide Kellyanne Conway wore a red, white and blue coat and red hat that she dubbed Trump Revolutionary Wear on Friday morning for Trumps inauguration . Conway, the strategist who managed Trumps presidential campaign, laughed and did a quick patriotic dance when reporters asked her about her color block wool coat. Oh it's just Gucci, she said of the designer outerwear, which retails for $3,600. The Trump presidency will have something for everyone, Conway went on to tell NBC Bay Area. She then mentioned some of Trumps campaign promises, including reforming taxes and repealing the Affordable Care Act. But it was the statement-making getup that has lit up the internet. See some of the reactions below. Some users thought the look invited comparison to Paddington Bear's blue Duffel coat and red : pic.
