The founder of Oculus , Palmer Luckey, quietly slipped back onto the public stage this week after a tumultuous year that ended with his departure from Facebook in March. First, Luckey appeared on Twitter on Wednesday, after months of silence, using a telling new bio image instead of his own face: Obi-Wan Kenobi, the mysterious, sometimes misunderstood Jedi in Star Wars who fights for the good side of The Force. When does the history of mixed reality start? There are lots of suggestions, but 1977 always shows up as a significant year. That’s the year millions of children – many of whom would one day become the captains of Silicon Valley – first experienced something they wouldnt be able to name for another decade or so. The plea of an intergalactic princess that set off a Star Wars film franchise still going strong today: “Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.” It’s a fascinating validation of Marshal McLuhan’s dictum that the medium is the message. While the content of Princess Leia’s message is what we have an emotional attachment to, it is the medium of the holographic projection – today we would call it “augmented reality” or “mixed reality” – that we remember most vividly. While this post is not going to provide an end-to-end blueprint for your own Princess Leia hologram, it will provide an overview of the technical terrain, point out some of the technical hurdles and point you in the right direction.

Season three of Star Wars Rebels has been fantastic! This week promises an epic showdown. This season we've seen Mon Mothma bring the rebel fleet together, the Mandalorians begin to throw off the yoke of the Empire, and Obi-Wan dispatched an old evil in pure Kenobi style. Now, Grand Admiral Thrawn is set to spring his trap, destroy Phoenix Squadron and cripple the Rebellion. We may know how this works out in the end, but watching them get there is a lot of fun.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Star Wars: Rebels episode "Twin Suns." From a certain point of view, Obi-Wan Kenobi sits at the very center of the entire Star Wars saga. Dead or alive, Kenobi is the only human character who shows his face in every episode of the original and prequel trilogies. His inability to prevent the rise of the Empire, or the creation of Darth Vader, is the core story of Episodes I-III. Kenobi's nurturing of Luke and lying to the kid about his dad sets in motion the core story of Episodes IV-VI. The core mystery of how he turned into a Force ghost when he lost his duel with Darth Vader in Star Wars lasted six whole movies. Read more...
