The new car is named after him, as was its predecessor in 2005, named after one of Chiron's contemporaries, Pierre Veyron , who drove a Bugatti to victory at Le Mans in 1939. Sadly, the war marked the beginning of the end for Bugatti, and after Ettore’s death in 1947, the decline became a terminal one, with the doors shutting for good in 1952. But the history books from then until the Volkswagen Group’s acquisition of the rights to the brand name in 1998 are not blank. Far from it. In 1987, Italian businessman Romano Artioli purchased the Bugatti name, built a factory, and, in 1991, launched the EB110 supercar, a year before the rival Jaguar XJ220. On 16 March 1994, Autocar subjected the GT to our famous road test. “There was a time when Bugatti’s glorious return to form looked shaky,” we began. “But the fingernail chewing is now over, terminated, and the blue EB110 you see here is the terminator.

Deputy editor John McIlroy thinks its about time Volkswagen published real-world economy figures 2017-03-22 17:55 The Volkswagen Group has been through the mill over the past two years, but as it reported at its annual press conference last week, record sales of 10.3 million cars in 2016 suggest that it is bouncing back after Dieselgate . I was in the audience as the VW board congratulated itself on the firm’s spectacular recovery – although the fact that the bill for the scandal has now reached almost 20 million euros (and counting) must still sting a little. When the men in suits opened the floor to questions, I asked VW Group boss Matthias Müller if he felt the company’s brands should be following PSA Peugeot Citroen ’s lead in publishing real-world fuel economy figures for their cars. • VW emissions scandal latest VW’s French rival issued more realistic data on around 1,000 cars a couple of weeks back, with figures produced using a test called the Real Driving Emissions standard.

Volkswagen’s answer to the Nissan Juke has been a long time coming, but here’s our first glimpse at what it may look like The Volkswagen T-Roc has been revealed in a CGI image, revealing the upcoming small SUV's full styling. Taking clear inspiration from the Tiguan’s design, albeit on a smaller, lower-riding body, the T-Roc also draws heavily from the next Polo, which was recently spotted undisguised . Given the T-Roc’s size, it’s likely to share engines with the Polo, as well as smaller Golf engines; the 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engines are mooted. Read our review of a pre-production Volkswagen Up GTI Diesel options will be 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre units, and four-wheel drive will be available as both an option, or standard on higher-powered models. Six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG automatic gearboxes are also expected, with the latter an optional extra.

Small cars can be really, really fun. Sure, it’s not uncommon to see the compact segment associated with less than thrilling prospects, such as commuter mules and plain-old boring A-to-B transport, but if you do it right, the pairing of diminutive size and low curb weight can be the right recipe to make something thrilling, something to get your juices flowing. Whether it’s attacking cones at the autocross, slinging dirt on a rally cross course, zipping between the apexes on the road course, or charging up a deserted mountain road on the weekends, a sport compact is the right fit for a wide range of speed lovers. This is the realm of the pocket rocket, a giant slayer with a mean little attitude and a whole lot of potential. If you like mixing your performance with a compact body style, there are lots of options out there. Here’s the top five. For this comparison, we chose the following entries – the Ford Focus RS, Honda Civic Type R, Mini Cooper Hardtop John Cooper Works, Subaru WRX STI, and Volkswagen Golf R.

09 –that’s less than £1 a hour. When putting in a 40-hour week, car workers earn $2,2751,830) a year. In view of what these workers achieve for India as a premier league (in volume terms) car-producing nation, they perhaps deserve rather more. Spain Annual production (2015): 2.2 million Estimated annual salary: $46,70037,600) GDP per head: $30,00024,100) Underestimate the Spaniards at your peril, as they may have only one local auto brand (SEAT) but they build more cars than Brits. The huge SEAT factory outside Barcelona also makes Volkswagen s and Audi s, while Ford , Nissan , PSA Peugeot - Citroen and General Motors all build cars in Spain as well. Despite churning out so many motors, the average salary is 21.30 Euros18.15) per hour. This means workers earn just under £1 an hour less than their UK counterparts – but they’re cashing in, as the cost of living is cheaper in Spain.

VW's new large SUV targets the BMW X5 and Volvo XC90; it'll get a more luxurious interior and evolved design The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg will receive a more luxurious interior and a design influenced by its smaller sibling, the Tiguan, when it lands in less than a year's time. The five-seat SUV model will sit directly above the Tiguan when it replaces the current Touareg, which has been on sale since 2011. It'll also eventually sit above the Crossblue production model when that car is launched into the US and Chinese markets sometime next year. The image of the 2017 Touareg, which surfaced on a Facebook fan page reveals the car's full front-end styling, showing its LED lighting more angular design. The car’s shape looks similar to that of the larger (and US-focused) Atlas , but more rounded wheel arches, a larger front grille and a shorter wheelbase are the most obvious differences.

Introduced in 2000 as the Suzuki Ignis, the Swift was redesigned in 2004 and again in 2010 when the familiar third-generation model was launched. In 2017, the Swift passed into its fourth generation and received the company’s brand-new design language, which debuted on the Baleno hatchback. The redesigned Swift was launched in Japan in late December 2016 and made its European debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. For many years, Suzuki has been surviving on the European market with just four nameplates, the Swift hatchback and the Jimny, Vitara, and SX4 crossovers. In 2015, the Japanese added two more vehicles to its stable. The Ignis name was revived for a crossover similar to the Jimny, while the Baleno was conceived to compete in the subcompact market dominated by the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta. Once it gained access to new niches, Suzuki turned its attention to the Swift, one of its best-selling models in Europe.

“The latest Suzuki Swift builds on predecessor’s appeal, but can’t topple the supermini class leadersThe Suzuki Swift is a supermini that has slowly built itself a strong following, despite its maker having a lower profile in the UK than many others. The previous model earned fans with its disarming looks and a genuine sense of driving fun. Add low running and purchase costs into the bargain and the Japanese marque had a success story on its hands. The latest generation seeks to build on the previous Swift’s strengths, while addressing its weaknesses. It has a hard task ahead of it, though – its popular Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa rivals are becoming ever-more capable, while the SEAT Ibiza, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Volkswagen Polo all offer their own potent take on the supermini formula. Image 1 of 27 Like the previous Swift, the latest model is keenly priced, but it needs to be, as cars like the Citroen C3, Hyundai i20 and Kia Rio offer such appealing value for money.
