German auto giant Volkswagen on Friday said it raced back into the black in 2016 as car sales hit an all-time high, in the latest sign of its "dieselgate" scandal fading into the rearview mirror. VW reported a net profit of 5.1 billion euros ($5.4 billion) last year, recovering from a stinging 1.6-billion-euro loss in the immediate aftermath of the emissions cheating revelations in 2015. "While the past fiscal year posed major challenges for us, despite the crisis the group's operating business gave its best-ever performance," chief executive Matthias Mueller said in a statement. The VW group -- which includes the brands Porsche, Audi and Skoda -- beat analyst expectations with record revenues of 217.3 billion euros, up nearly two percent on the year before. Underlying or operating profit rose to 7.1 billion euros, from a loss of 4.06 billion in 2015, it said.

4 This isnt the best Leon estate available, but as a niche player the ST Cupra 300 does deliver the prodigious pace that some people will want from a family wagon. It’s on par with the Golf R Estate in those terms, although the SEAT’s price advantage over the Volkswagen is likely to be reduced once you get down to monthly rates. And while the Leon is more powerful than the Ford Focus ST estate, it’s not as enjoyable to drive. The e-Golf, Volkswagens electric version of its popular compact car, officially gets around 50 percent more range this year than it did in the previous model. That means it now has an EPA rating of 125 miles on a single charge (via Autoblog), compared to 83 miles before. The 125-mile range is still a far cry from the Chevy Bolts industry-leading EV range, but the e-Golf is not Read More

THE Volkswagen Arteon is set to sit above the company's current flagship sedan, the Passat, when it officially launches at this year's Geneva motor show. Alongside SUVs, luxury coupés and coupé-styled sedans – i.e., fastbacks – are very much in vogue with the car-buying public. And with the Arteon, VW is promising a car that will combine comfort, practicality and cutting-edge active safety tech. And while the company isn't prepared to go into specifics until the car's official reveal on March 7, it has said that many of the Arteon's features, particularly its semi-autonomous tech, have until now been the preserve of luxury car manufacturers. The 2017 Geneva motor show opens to journalists on March 7 and to the public from March 9. – AFP Relaxnews

A few years ago I bought a pair of those go-faster Puma racing drivers boots, with soles made to look like tyre treads. They are the commercial version of Formula One footwear, so obviously I was channelling my inner Fernando Alonso. Or something. They re-emerged last week when I decided to give them some pedal time in the revamped Volkswagen Touran; but walking to the car I suddenly felt hopelessly overdressed, as though I had pitched up in black tie to play pin the tail on the donkey....

Introduced for the 2015 model year, the current-generation Toyota Yaris is one of the most popular hatchbacks in its class and is already considered one of the most reliable and cost-friendly options on the market. However, Toyota has received a lot of heat for not offering a higher-performance version to go against the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTi. Well, it seems that the Japanese automaker listened, as it announced a sportier, more powerful Yaris for the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Called the Yaris GRMN, its inspired and influenced by Toyota’s return to the World Rally Championship in 2017 with the Yaris WRC and its described as "unique in the hot-hatch market." Granted, its difficult to imagine a Toyota being unique, but the company is actually referring to the drivetrain, as the Yaris GRMN will get its juice from a supercharged engine.

Volkswagen's CC replacement, the Arteon, will make its debut at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show and it looks exactly like we predicted — right down to the color, no less. Harman today announced that it has achieved the first-ever implementation of wireless CarPlay in vehicles. It said its infotainment system is currently being deployed for a luxury German automaker, which more than likely refers to BMW, the only automaker that currently supports wireless CarPlay as a built-in feature. A number of BMW models have supported wireless CarPlay since late last year, and Harman's announcement comes just as the 2017 BMW 5 Series with wireless CarPlay hits the streets in the United States. Harman did not disclose plans to roll out wireless CarPlay to other automakers, but it has business relationships with several vehicle manufacturers, including Volkswagen Group, Daimler, and FCA, so it is plausible that wireless CarPlay could expand to brands such as Audi, VW, Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep in the future. "HARMAN is the renowned Tier 1 supplier of infotainment systems to global automakers,” a company spokesperson told MacRumors.
