Credit: NASA/GSFC/A.T. Sinclair Annular vs. Total Sunday's eclipse is the first of two solar eclipses for 2017, and the only annular eclipse for the year. We get an annular eclipse when the Moon is near apogee (which occurred eight days ago on February 18 th ) and the Earth is near perihelion (which occurred last month on January 4th). At this time, the apparent size of the Moon is too small to cover the Sun as seen from the Earth, resulting instead in a brilliant annulus or “ring of fire” in the sky. Likewise, we refer to the shadow trace of this ring across the Earth as an antumbra , instead of the familiar umbra of a total solar eclipse. Strange as it may seem, annular eclipses are slightly more common than total solar eclipses in our current epoch, and will become increasingly more so as the Moon slowly recedes from the Earth. The alignment needed for an annular eclipse.

What is a disc herniation? The intervertebral disc is an elastic soft cushion that is between the vertebrae of the spine (Figure 9). It connects the vertebrae together, gives stability to the spine, and allows the spine to move. The intervertebral disc has two parts; the annulus fibrosus (tough fibrous outer layer) and the nucleus pulposus (soft gel-like inner layer) (Figure 10). If the soft gel-like inner material leaks out or herniates through a tear in the fibrous outer layer, it becomes a disc herniation. A tear of the disc may allow the gel-like material in the center of the disc to protrude and leak out, causing a herniation of the disc, which presses into the nerve root as it exits the spine. This irritates the close by nerve root, causing sciatica. Sciatica is one of the most common symptoms of lumbar disc herniation. Treatment Treatment will initially include anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxation and physical therapy.

Stargazers in south and central Africa will be treated to a spectacular solar eclipse Thursday when the Moon wanders into view to make the Sun appear as a "ring of fire", astronomers say. The phenomenon, known as an annular solar eclipse, happens when there is a near-perfect alignment of the Earth, Moon and Sun. But unlike a total eclipse, when the Sun is blacked out, sometimes the Moon is too far from Earth, and its apparent diameter too small, for complete coverage. "At the eclipse's peak, all that will be visible is a ring of light encircling the black disk that is the Moon," said astronomer Pascal Descamps of the Paris Observatory, in the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion to witness the event. "That will be the magic moment," he told AFP. Daylight should be slightly dimmed, as on a very cloudy day. Only people along a very narrow, 100-kilometre (62-mile) band stretching across central Africa, Madagascar and Reunion will see the full effect of the ring, or annulus.
