Beeley’s statements about the White Helmets (who, despite their ubiquitous image in the west, nobody in East Aleppo had even heard of during her time there last year) have now been backed by none other than award-winning journalist John Pilger, who called them “a complete propaganda construct” in a recent interview. I have lost all patience with people who involve themselves in the conversation about the current Syrian administration by acknowledging the existence of western lies and propaganda about Syria and yet still maintaining that Assad is an evil dictator who needs to be deposed somehow. This is an astonishingly common perspective in online discourse about Syria even among people who are relatively woke to what’s going on; they see it as the more moderate and well-reasoned position to simultaneously acknowledge that the US power establishment is known to use lies, propaganda and false flags to manufacture public consent for devastating acts of military violence, and also that Assad is horrible and evil.

Byers received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award given for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty, for his actions while rescuing an American hostage in Afghanistan in 2012. The poppy became a symbol of casualties of war after Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote a poem about the sight of red poppies growing over soldier graves following World War I. The American Legion tradition of wearing poppies dates to 1920. Several nations around the world wear the poppy on Remembrance Day, observed in most countries on November 11, to honor those killed in the line of duty. One of the most vivid uses of the poppy is in London, where in 2014 the British government surrounded its famed Tower of London with ceramic poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I. Memorial Day in the United States will be observed this year on Monday.

Because of its early calendar spot in the awards game the Cannes Film Festival is not always the best gauge for predicting Oscar success, but many a major nominee has first appeared in Cannes even if its overall importance to the Oscars is nowhere near as key as Telluride, Venice and Toronto can be when they kick off the official awards season in early September. Only one Academy Award winner came out of Cannes last year and that was Iran's The Salesman for Foreign...
