S. troop presence on the southern island of Okinawa as deterrence. During his election campaign, Trump demanded that Tokyo pay more of the cost to keep the 50,000 U.S. troops stationed in the country under a bilateral security pact, threatening to pull them out otherwise. He has not said that after being elected, presumably following repeated reminders by Japanese officials that Japan makes significant host-nation contributions. Experts say Japan has benefited from its alliance with Washington largely because of the U.S.-led world order. With some worried about how that could change under a Trump administration, Japan should do its utmost to convince his administration that the alliance is important for both sides. I guess we took American internationalism too much for granted ... It has always been, at least after World War II, the bedrock of the international order.

The same was true in the 1960s, when liberals were celebrating their "permanent majority" and conservatives were fighting not just for the future of the Republican Party but the future of conservatism. This yin and yang of liberalism and conservatism is just another derivative of the federalist vs. anti-federalist argument that dominated the Federal Convention in 1787 and has continued under various labels and parties ever since. America needs this dualism. It is a vaccine against the dangerous extremes of democracy. Liberals should celebrate their contributions not bemoan their fate - for Americans need to be reminded of what liberalism has given them. In the last half century, the liberal agenda expanded the franchise to eighteen-year-olds and abolished the poll tax. It began the removal of discrimination against blacks with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

It is well known the Hinckley family had close ties the Bushes, and John Hinckley Jr. ( who was recently freed after 34 years in prison) attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Now we have a man who has copious ties directly to the Clintons threatening to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. The Daily Mail reports that there is evidence that Puopolo was the target of mental health court proceedings in 2016, although the details have not been made public.

Dale Walker 5 hours 1 min ago Politics TechUK, a body representing more than 900 UK-based technology firms and startups, has warned that leaving the single market will have a "bigger impact on tech than the rest of the UK economy," adding that it's essential the government does everything that it can to secure a "soft landing". On Tuesday, prime minister Theresa May finally revealed the government's strategy on Brexit, which will result in the UK leaving the EU single market regardless of the outcome of the impending negotiations. Instead, the government plans to seek "the greatest possible access to the single market on a reciprocal basis, through a comprehensive trade agreement", but May made it clear that, aside from some specific projects that may be of interest, UK contributions to the EU were over. The final deal will almost certainly result in the UK leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice as well, and will likely lead to heavier restrictions on the movement of goods and services, including the reintroduction of trade tariffs.

Syariah judge Mohd Hairuddin Ab Rahim said the fine was meted out after taking into account mitigation from both sides. "The Syariah court took into account the age, health, his position as an MP for Shah Alam along with his contributions to society. "While the court took into account that this was his first offence, the sentence should serve as a deterrent for others not to commit the offence in future," he said in his judgment. Meanwhile, Khalid told reporters that he has instructed his counsel Dr Dzulqarnain Lokman to file an appeal to reduce the fine at the Syariah High Court. "In addition, I have instructed my lawyer Hanipa Maidin to appeal against the constitutionality of the offence at the Federal Court," he told reporters when met at outside the court complex, here, yesterday. Expected to face an uphill battle regarding the constitutional challenge, Khalid said his lawyer will be presenting his case from a different angle.
