President Donald Trump is on his way to leaving a conservative imprint on the federal judiciary with the confirmation of Amul Thapar, his first judge to the lower courts, and a renewed willingness from Republicans to sidestep a century-old custom involving judicial nominees. The Senate voted 52-44 on Thursday to install Thapar, a favorite of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), at the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The confirmation marked the first judicial nominee aside from now-Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court for Trump, who came into office with an usually higher number of judicial vacancies. “He has a reputation as a qualified judge with an impressive legal mind,” McConnell said of Thapar. “He will fairly apply the law to all who enter his courtroom because, in Judge Thapar’s own words, ‘the most important attribute of a judge is to be open-minded and not to prejudge a case without reading the briefs, researching the law, and hearing from the parties.

Bicycles are most often thought of as convenient modes of transportation or a method of exercise, both of which means many people have them. But not everyone lives in a place that has space to store them, which is why you often find them in apartment hallways, entryways, and hanging from ceilings. Enter the folding bicycle. While there have been a number of folding bikes on the market, not many of them look like they were designed with riding in mind. Recently launched at the UK's handmade bicycle show, Bespoked, the Whippet Bicycle aims to change all of that. The Whippet Bicycle was designed and developed by product designer/engineer Graham Powell , who also happens to be a lifelong cycling devotee. The patent pending, in-line retraction design comes after Powell looked at the folding bicycle in a new way by examining the way it folds. Instead of the typical hinged folding method, the Whippet does the tilt, the tuck, and the tidy using zero tools for an easy fold.

WHETHER or not their bid to reform health care succeeds, Republicans think Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act will founder. For years, critics of the law have said that its health-insurance markets will enter a “death spiral” in which rising premiums drive out healthy buyers, forcing premiums higher still. “Obamacare is absolutely deadPresident Donald Trump told The Economist on May 4th. If he is right, calamity looms. Eighteen million Americans buy insurance for themselves, rather than through an employer; it is this part of the insurance market that looks wobbly. Mr Trump thinks its collapse would force Democrats to join his reform effort. And he is putting his money where his mouth is. Indeed, his administration is part of the problem. Insurers raised premiums in the individual market by an average of 22% in 2017. They had been caught out by the poor health of enrollees on Obamacare’s “exchanges”, websites that serve a little over... Continue reading

Stakhov says Ukrainian oysterstaste is more delicate, since the water in the Black Sea is less salty than, for example, in the Mediterranean Sea. Ukrainian oysters are also cheaper than those raised in Europe. To export their oysters, the partners will also have to receive a European quality certificate, which they say costs a six-figure amount of dollars. “(But) in several years we will be feeding the whole of Europe,” Stakhov says. Bureau Fraai completed renovations on a 1950's farmhouse in Aalten, Gelderland, The Netherlands, while also adding a modern extension onto the home's existing barn. The homeowners longed to update the aging interior, while also connecting the inside with the surrounding landscape. To do that, the architects opened up the ground floor of the original house and designed an extension onto the old barn that opened up to the garden. They kept the original brick and ceramic roof tiles on the original barn, while incorporating black, pre-weathered titanium zinc on the facade and roof of the new part, helping to modernize the entire property. On the new end of the barn, a wooden scissor frame catches your eye from the outside and allows light to enter through its open window panes. Inside the same wooden scissor frames are utilized and become a design feature throughout the open space, while giving nod to historical Dutch farm structures.

Appeal judges have ruled Theresa May acted unlawfully in refusing to resettle six refugee families who've been stranded on a British military base in Cyprus for the past 19 years. Lord Justice Irwin declared their living conditions as unacceptable and ordered the Home Secretary to allow the families to enter the UK as soon as possible. (Credit: Tommy Chavannes) He said it would be unreasonable and a failure of obligations if resettlement did not happen quickly. The families were washed ashore from a sinking fishing boat in the Mediterranean in 1998 and detained in disused asbestos ridden accommodation on the British overseas territory of Dhekelia. (Credit: Tommy Chavannes) They have been there ever since while the Government refused to allow them entry to the UK. It has argued its obligations under the Refugee Convention did not apply to this overseas territory.

The Labor Department says the seniors' employment program has helped more than 1 million workers in this age group enter the workforce. But Trump says that's not enough. His budget plan says 68,000 people a year get some support from the program. But at a cost of nearly $6,500 per participant, the program "fails to meet its other major statutory goals of fostering economic self-sufficiency," it says. The document says the seniors could get help instead under the 2014 Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act programs, which apply to would-be workers of all ages. Singletary estimates that locally about 40 percent of people who qualify for the seniors' training and placement positions ``simply are going through the motions, show up one time to fulfill a requirement and you don't see them again.'' Singletary says, "They spoil the whole outlook for the agency and the participants that want to do things for themselves.
