It should be cold. If the owner has started and warmed up the bike contrary to your request, they could be hiding any multitude of problems. Either leave, or make your assessment, and halve the price you think the bike is worth. Grab the exhaust (while COLD) and give it a shake. It should be securely retained. Grab the gearshift lever. There should be a small amount of looseness (free play') before you can feel resistance as it shifts gears. Does it only move up and down (without any appreciable sideways movement)? Do the same check on the brake pedal. Move the rider and pillion pegs. Do they rotate freely on their joints? The Third Test is Sit Sit on the bike and hold the front brake. Bounce on the seat to compress the rear suspension. Then stand up and lean over the headstock. Push down hard to compress the front suspension. Any squeaks or groans? Is damping evident, or does the suspension pogo' up and down? Turn the handlebars left and right, as if you are steering the bike.

MELBOURNE: Lewis Hamilton said Thursday he wanted a season-long world title joust with Sebastian Vettel and declared Ferrari as the team to beat in this weekend's Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Three-time world champion Hamilton said he would love a close battle with Vettel, who strung together four world titles with Red Bull before switching to Ferrari. While Mercedes have dominated the last three seasons with Hamilton winning two titles and Nico Rosberg last year before his shock retirement, the Ferraris were quickest in pre-season testing. Hamilton believes Ferrari are 'keeping a lid' on expectations but said he would savour a battle with Vettel for this year's world driver's championship in the new generation of quicker cars. "I've not had a lot of battles with Sebastian on the track. Of course, I'd love to have that. I think the fans want to see that," Hamilton said.

Thousands will take to the streets this weekend as Hong Kong gears up for its chief executive election on Sunday, with police on standby to handle any violent clashes. At least seven groups, from the pro-democracy and pro-Beijing camps, will organise protests over the weekend, according to the police. The force estimated that between 200 and 500 people from six groups would take part in protests near the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, where the 1,194 members of the Election...

"We know Ferrari have had a good winter but we're hopeful we can close that overnight. We'll get a better indication tomorrow but we've got some work to do tonight." The second session was stopped after a big crash for Renault's Jolyon Palmer, who lost the rear of his car on the last corner and spun into the barriers. "I'm fine," Palmer told his team over the radio. The shunt damaged the car's rear suspension, while the rear wing was detached. Palmer missed the remainder of the session, in a blow to his preparations for the weekend race. Brazilian Felipe Massa stopped his Williams car at Turn 11 after reporting he could not engage gears, and walked back to the team garage. The troubled McLaren team had no on-track breakdowns on the opening day with Fernando Alonso finishing in a respectable 12th place. — AFP

Designing a car is extremely expensive. The amount of trial and error that goes into product development is staggering and the amount of money it costs is even more so. This is especially true in the auto manufacturing world, where prototypes have to be developed every time they want to change even a small aspect of a dashboard or window or door panel. This is not only costly but time consuming, which is even more valuable than money. So car companies have turned to VR to help develop aspects of car interiors and ergonomics. BMW is doing the same thing and is now using the Unreal Engine to help develop its VR systems. For those of you who aren't gaming nerds. the Unreal Engine is a graphics engine developed by Epic Games, the creators of the quite popular video game series Gears of War. The Unreal Engine is one of the more impressive graphics engines on the market, capable of creating vast and impressively realistic virtual worlds.

There are four turbos, two of which are blowing all the time and fed by eight exhausts apiece, to minimise what would otherwise be unimaginable lag. The other two are valved, to drop in and out depending on throttle position and rev range, and when they’re ‘on’, each of the four turbos is powered by four exhausts. That they drop in and out helps to make a near-flat torque curve of 1180lb ft from 2000pm to 6000rpm, a number that seems no smaller no matter how many times you write it. It travels to all four wheels via a revised version of the Veyron’s Ricardo dual-clutch automatic transmission that uses heavier-duty clutches and lighter gears. Power goes mostly to the rear, but with a Haldex coupling pushing it to the front when the rears can’t cope. Which would be often. Wheel sizes are up by an inch each end over the Veyron, so 20in fronts and 21s at the rear, but tyres are wider at the front (285mm) and narrower at the back (355mm) than on a Veyron Super Sport, for a better handling balance.

The quad turbo W16 is an absolute powerhouse, but it trades the shouty vocals of an Aston Martin or Lamborghini for a deep, purposeful pulse that simmers behind your shoulders. It’s smooth as silk to drive at low speeds, thanks to colossal reserves of torque from a little over idle, and a seven-speed DSG transmission that shuffles through the gears with near-seamless ease. The brakes - carbon discs 420mm in diameter and 44mm thick at the front, gripped by massive four-piston callipers housing 8 individual brake pads - have much improved cooling over the Veyron. The way they slow the two-tonne Chiron from high speeds is extraordinary (2G braking forces are possible, thanks to the combination of discs and air brake), but the fact they are also remarkably progressive and feelsome at low speed is just as important. Image 4 of 15 Image 4 of 15 The Veyron was never an especially engaging car to drive, but the Chiron is significantly more tactile, especially through the steering.

The new engine’s single twin-scroll turbo is now fractionally larger too, helping increase power by 14bhp to 335bhp. Torque is significantly increased as well, from 332lb ft to 369lb ft. The new engine is a real joy to rev right to its 7000rpm rev limit; it doesnt lose any energy as it gets close to the red line and it continues to emit a distinctly six-cylinder timbre. Sadly, it sounds best from outside the car. Image 14 of 14 Image 14 of 14 The standard gearbox is a six-speed manual, and it really suits the torquey nature of the new engine; there’s impressive acceleration, even in the higher gears. The gear change isnt the slickest of actions; it feels too rubbery and the centre armrest puts your arm at an awkward angle. However, there’s a much greater connection to the drivetrain with the manual gearbox than with the optional automatic. The eight-speed torque-converter auto available in the M140i is the same ZF gearbox as in the old car and in, well, almost everything.
