For some time, scientists have suspected that life may have existed on Mars in the deep past. Owing to the presence of a thicker atmosphere and liquid water on its surface, it is entirely possible that the simplest of organisms might have begun to evolve there. And for those looking to make Mars a home for humanity someday, it is hoped that these conditions (i.e favorable to life) could be recreated again someday. But as it turns out, there are some terrestrial organisms that could survive on Mars as it is today. According to a recent study by a team of researchers from the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences (ACSPS) at the University of Arkansas, four species of methanogenic microorganisms have shown that they could withstand one of the most severe conditions on Mars, which is its low-pressure atmosphere. The study, titled Low Pressure Tolerance by Methanogens in an Aqueous Environment: Implications for Subsurface Life on Mars ,” was recently published in the journal Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres .

1980s American teenagers, if they were lucky enough to attend a school with a computer lab, would have sat down in front of Apple IIs or maybe Commodore VIC20s. Similarly, their British cousins had BBC Micros. Solid and educational machines with all sorts of wholesome software, which of course the kids absolutely preferred to run in preference to playing computer games. New Zealanders, at least a few of them, had the Poly-1. A footnote in the 8-bit microcomputer story, this was a home-grown computer with a built-in monitor clad in a futuristic one-piece plastic shell. Non-Kiwis never had the chance to encounter its 6809 processor and 64k of RAM, the global computer business being too great a challenge for a small New Zealand technology company, especially one whose government support had evaporated. Decades after the end of Poly-1 production, some survive in the hands of enthusiasts.

Her daughter and another girl accompanied a friend to her home. The men confronted them on their way back. "The men pulled up in a car alongside them and told them to get in. When they refused, they pushed them into the car and drove off," Abdirahman said. "They were taken into the car forcefully and then the men turned on music. They took them to the outskirts of the town and they did the ugly things that you have heard [about]." Abdirahman said her daughter was brutally beaten and tortured because she told the men, "You have to kill me to rape me." Abdirahman was at her daughter's bedside at a hospital in the town of Galkayo when she talked to VOA. Local officials and religious leaders have condemned the attack and have vowed to seek justice for the victims. Hassan Salah Ayahle, the mayor of Goldogob, said authorities took the two girls to the hospital after the incident and then immediately started searching for the perpetrators.

I feel more British when I'm in Bangladesh and I feel more Bangladeshi when I'm in Britain, so for me it's about no borders, really, a home is where for me, where family is and where they feel most safe. I'm interested that you say you never felt more of an outsider in the UK than you do today, because just from reading things that you said in the past there were difficult experiences when you were a kid.
