Josephine performed an amazing illusion during Saturday night’s auditions, leaving the judges clueless to how she managed it. The performer appeared to balance lanterns in the air without touching them, allowing them to float around. She then baffled Britain's Got Talent viewers at home when she got inside a wooden crate, before vanishing from it. Josephine then appeared under a sheet floating in the middle of the room. Britain's Got Talent: Viewers think they've rumbled ...

For the love of Pinterest, please stop putting old ladders in your bathrooms, people. The rise of HGTV and quaint-as-fuck-looking homes is a welcome change to what life was like before Chip and Joanna Gaines came into our lives. Who knew a few craftily distressed pieces of furniture and some industrial touches could make a normal apartment or home feel like it was just a few feet away from some grazing cattle? We all secretly want to live in Waco, but we'll settle with some mason jars. SEE ALSO: Twitter is gloriously roasting the ridiculous premise of House Hunters But we've gone too far, people. Among the ridiculous, rustic, and chic decor, rusty old lanterns turned into succulent planters, and shelves made out of industrial piping, there is one trend that must be stopped: reclaiming old ladders and putting them into bathrooms. Chinese lanterns in memory of the three teenagers. Teenagers that suddenly had a life cut short. More and more people are trespassing on railway tracks in this region. The latest figures from the British Transport Police show that most offenders are young people. And its during the school holidays that the number.

Carla and I took a one-week trip to Tokyo. It was my sixth visit to Japan's capital, and it was my favorite so far. For the next few days, I'll be writing about recommended things to do there. See them all here . After our refreshing visit to the hot springs , we took a short train ride back to the Kichijōji neighborhood of Tokyo. Some of the train and subway stations have English on their maps, and some don't. It can be a bit of a challenge to get around, but the conductors speak English and are happy to answer questions. (The two photos below were taken at Yoyogi Station, not Kichijōji.) It was early evening, and we wanted to have dinner at one of the dozens of little 8-seat bars in Harmonica Yokocho , a grid of alleys next to the train station. It was crowded with pedestrians (the alleys are too narrow for cars) and the stores had red lanterns to entice customers.

the line of flowers and tributes has grown, hour by hour. Two carrying the simple message, RIP boys. Last night, several hundred people gathered at this airfield with Chinese lanterns and fireworks, a spontaneous celebration of three.

Councils are being urged to ban releases of balloons and sky lanterns on their land after balloon litter on beaches rose by more than half in a year.

The public are being asked to pledge their support for a ban on balloon releases in their local area by The Marine Conservation Society. The push follows volunteers finding an increase of over 50 per cent in the amount of balloon litter on UK beaches between 2015 and 2016. A three-year-old horse that died after choking on a balloon string recently highlighted the consequences of balloon litter on land. But on beaches and in the sea, balloons, strings, lanterns and frames can have long-lasting...

You know those globe-like paper lanterns that you can get for a couple of bucks at your local Chinatown? Those are great for providing soft, ambient lighting and I've got several in my apartment. They're also terribly fragile, of course, and are only meant to live indoors. BioLite, however, has figured out how you can bring that quality of illumination with you to the campsite. Check out their SiteLight XL , which is lightweight and easily breaks down for transport: While they've designed it to be used with any USB power source, BioLite is doing what Apple used to be really good at: Developing a product ecosystem whose components work better together, providing both ease-of-use and increased functionality. If you use their new BaseLantern XL , a sandwich-sized, solid-form-factor light source and battery, as the power source, you can dim the light via Bluetooth.

The day ended with a bang in Yunlin, which is about an hour’s ride from Chiayi, where the finale of the nine-day annual Taiwan Lantern Festival drew more than a million spectators. The star attraction among the 3,000 over lanterns dazzling visitors at the festival’s 50ha venue was a 23m-high lantern in the shape of a phoenix. A trip to Chiayi is not complete without spending a couple of hours at the Hinoki Village, originally the dormitories of the Forestry Bureau’s Chiayi Forest division under the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan during the Japanese Occupation between 1895 and 1945. The village retains 28 Japanese-style wooden buildings, all of which were built with cypress wood (hinoki in Japanese) from the nearby Alishan (Ali Mountain). From Chiayi, we crossed over to the adjacent Yunlin County where J&V Energy Technology set up its solar power plant last year.

The future of Bedminster's Winter Lantern Parade has come under threat as a result of council funding cuts. The popular parade, which has been running for six years, sees hundreds of people take to the streets of South Bristol for a stunning parade of handmade lanterns. This year's event was the biggest and best yet with more than 1200 people taking part and around 1500 spectators lining the streets. But the future of the event, which costs £19,000 a year to put on, has been thrown...

In the words of "Weird Al" Yankovic's 1996 hit Amish Paradise, they "party like it's 1699." Yankovic also claims that the Amish "shun fancy things like electricity," and that certainly jibes with our idea of candlelit Amish homes, kerosene-lit buggies, and so on. The problem is that this stereotype is almost entirely untrue. Most Amish love electricity—couldn't live without it, in fact. Now it's true that a typical Amish Ordnung —a community set of rules—will prohibit hooking up homes to the power grid. You never know what worldly influences are going to come in via the junction box! But other uses of electricity are usually just fine , says Erik Wesner, the Amish-curious author who maintains the Amish America information site. (The Amish are shockingly bad at keeping their own social media up to date, for some reason.) The days of candles, windmills, and kerosene lanterns are mostly gone, even in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

If this sounds like a dizzy flim-flam world, that is because, like ours, it is. Love, it is occasionally, said, knocks you off your feet. This is true for Heyer's characters, who resist in a state of personal disorientation within a perfectly formulaic narrative. Perhaps this explains why, when not writing regency romances, Heyer, excelled in perhaps the exemplar of English genre fictioncountry house murder mysteries. The country-house murder, with its narrow coziness and dawning realization that not everyone is who they say they are, is the comedy of intimacy's macabre inverse. Murder and marriage plots illuminate social life with colored lanterns. Paperback romance at its height remains delightfully frivolous while dramatizing something true—the armies of misjudgment, fear, and pride arrayed against the heart, the happy conspiracy needed to bring even the most unexciting lovers to the point where they can say, with A Clandestine Affair's Miss Tresilian and Lord Iver: "What a vulgar couple we are, love!' Well, who cares a rush for that?' he demanded.
