The statement suggests that the incoming Trump administration will not try to overturn a scientific conclusion from the EPA, known as an endangerment finding, which concluded that the federal government needs to regulate carbon dioxide to protect human health. Because of that finding Pruitt and Trump will need to create their own measure to regulate carbon dioxide emissions if they nix Obama's Clean Power Plan as the president elect repeatedly promised to do on the campaign trail. Another tense moment came as Democratic Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts challenged Pruitt to commit to recusing himself from the many matters where he has sued the EPA. Pruitt promised only to follow the guidance of the agency's ethics office. Republicans on the committee seemed eager to praise the nominee for what they described as appropriate use of the law to protect the environment during his time in Oklahoma.

But the academic novel in its pure, Lucky Jim form? No, not surviving well at all. I've read a handful of books in the dying genre over the past few years. Julie Schumacher's Dear Committee Members and C.K. Houck's The University in 2014, for instance. Adrian Jones Pearson's Cow Country in 2015, and Nathan Hill's The Nix in 2016. I regretted the time spent on them, for the most part. Schumacher's epistolary Dear Committee Members , built of emails and memos, proved enjoyable. And Hill's sprawling The Nix , with its tale of a mother and her half-failed professor son in Chicago, was an attempt at a major novelprecisely to the extent it wasn't really about academia. Why should we expect anything different? The genre was self-defeating on its own terms. The hundreds of college professors busily writing since the 1950s have emptied out that mine of academic waggery, as I noted back in 1996.

When unfolded, the handset will transform into a working 7-inch tablet. Samsung apparently started out developing a device that folded inward, but switched gears in August 2016, thinking it'd be too much of a hassle for someone to unfurl the phone anytime they wanted to use it. We've seen this fold-out design before in devices created by Lenovo, including a phone that turns into a wearable device and a foldable tablet that becomes a phablet-sized device. Lenovo Folio tablet concept Though Samsung is seemingly pushing ahead with its foldable smartphone, sources say it could nix a 2017 unveiling due to marketing and profitability concerns. A decision reportedly won't be made until an executive reshuffle is completed in February or March. One factor that could spur an unveiling is LG's reported plans to produce 100,000 foldable devices in Q4.

Starbucks is pulling its menu of beer, wine and dinner treats from more than 400 stores nationwide this week, the Associated Press reports. The Starbucks Evenings program ― which aimed to turn stores into cocktail-hour meetings spaces with a menu of beer, wine and shareable plates ― was first tested in 2010 and rolled out nationwide in 2014, according to Eater . Starbucks will nix the program in regular Starbucks stores, though a few licensed or overseas locations may continue it, the AP reports. Beer, wine and spirits will be served in Starbuckss newer, fancier Roastery and Reserve locations. It is too early to speculate about the impact the 2016 election in the United States will have on the future of Iran’s missile program. President-elect Donald Trump had harshly criticized the JCPOA, but also indicated that he would not “tear it up.” Of course, the United States cannot unilaterally abrogate a multinational accord, but there are ways to tighten it. Most senior appointees in his administration, inducing incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn; CIA director nominee Michael Pompeo; and John Bolton, a possible pick for Deputy Secretary of State, are bitter critics of the deal. There is little doubt that individually and collectively they would try to change the American terms of the accord. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already signaled his plans to suggest ways in which Trump can nix the accord altogether.

Uh huh, it’s actually beneficial to your immune system, energy levels and athletic performance. £5 for 4 cans, buy on innisandgunn.com West Nix Wheat Beer (0.0%) Straight outta Glasgow, NixBavarian for “nothing” – is an attempt to prove that alcohol-free beer doesnt have to “taste like wet cardboard”, according to the German-born brewery owner Petra Wetzel. And she’s only gone and done it. This bottle’s less soggy paper, more fruity and spicy. And with zero rule-breaking guilt, too. Huzzah! £15 for 12 bottles, buy on westbeer.com St Peter’s Without (0.05%) Suffolk’s best-loved small-time brewery spent almost £1m on developing this bottle, and although it states 0.05% alcohol on the label, it came in closer to 0.009% in recent tests meaning there’s more booze in your morning orange juice than in here. But is it any good? Put it this way, there’s a reason St Peter’s is keeping its brewing process for this one a very closely-guarded secret.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has named the man behind his controversial meeting with Donald Trump last August to a new position as foreign minister, as the country readies to deal with the new U.S. president. Luis Videgaray, who was was forced to resign from his post as finance minister after Trump's trip to Mexico, was named foreign relations minister on Wednesday, according to the Guardian . With the change of government in the United States on Jan. 20, the instructions for secretary Videgaray is to accelerate dialogue and contacts so that from the first day the bases for building a constructive relationship can be established, Peña Nieto said during a press conference. It should be a relationship, which will allow us to strengthen bilateral ties in security, immigration, commerce and investment. The meeting between Peña Nieto and Trump was widely viewed as negative by people in Mexico following the President-elect's vows to build a wall along the country's border and nix trade deals with Mexico.

As an Apple user, I've become somewhat disillusioned over the past few years. Maybe it's the spirit of Steve Jobs slowly vanishing from the company, or that Apple seems to care more about keeping up with expensive trends lately rather than setting them, or the nagging notion Apple doesn't have my best interests as a user in mind. Whatever it is, I was passively on the hunt for a new laptop with the pipe dream that one day I could junk my Apple for something even better. One that could run a *nix operating system of some sort, be made with quality hardware, and not concern me over privacy issues. I didn't think that those qualities existed in a laptop at all, and that my 2012 MacBook Pro was the lesser of evils that I might as well keep using. But then, we published a ThinkPad think piece that had two words in it that led me on a weeks-long journey to the brand-new, eight-year-old laptop I'm currently working from.
