Surprisingly, on May 21, Bahadur deposited the first installment, Rs 13.34 crore, of the annual Rs 26.51 crore fee he is supposed to pay to mine at the Saidpur Khurd site in Nawanshahr, Punjab. Bahadur, a resident of Bilari in Moradabad, has kept his phone switched off ever since the controversy hit the headlines. Gurjit has so far maintained that he does not directly or indirectly have a stake in the mining business and that Bahadur had quit the company when he sought mining rights."There are thousands of employees who have worked with me and left from time to time and I cannot be held accountable for what they do after leaving my companies," Gurjit said.

Salem, Mass. — More than a dozen women and men accused of witchcraft in this sleepy New England village are criticizing President Donald Trump for saying the current investigation into possible ties between his campaign and the Russian government is "the greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" "Gimme a break," said one elderly resident of Salem accused of witchcraft. "I’m going to be hanged on Gallow’s Hill because a bunch of girls had spasms." "The president has it easy," added one of the main defendants in the case. "He’s worried about a memo. I, on the other hand, have to worry about the Court of Oyer and Terminer making spectral evidence admissible. Spectral evidence!" "There is much value in the interpretation of visions and dreams," countered Boston minister and Trump supporter Rev. Cotton Mather, the author of Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions , a publication some have regarded as "fake news.

In the neighboring Garden State, eliminating the deduction could be particularly crushing because residents there pay the highest property taxes in the nation. According to the Tax Foundation, four out of 10 residents itemize the state and local tax deduction in New Jersey. Another think tank, the Tax Policy Center, estimated that cutting the provision would increase the average tax bill for a New Jersey resident by more than $3,500 per year. “Our taxes are already way too high here at the local level and it’s causing us to lose good people,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) said in an interview. “We simply can’t afford to eliminate this.” If a tax change of this magnitude were to go into effect, voters would be likely to press even harder for property tax cuts, said Michael Hayes, assistant professor of public policy at Rutgers University. “It’s going to put more pressure on state and local governments to try and cut spending and put more limitations on the growth of property taxes,” he said.

Meaningful Roles In Society This week Mark Zuckerberg spoke to the latest class of Harvard graduates, offering advice about the future and inspiration to grow on. Among his ideas was the notion that universal basic income (UBI) , a standard basesalary” for each member of society that can help meet our basic needs regardless of the work we do, is worth exploring. UBI pilot programs are sprouting up all over the world , including one in Oakland, California sponsored by Y Combinator. Many are modeled in part after the State of Alaska's long-termPermanent Fund” which distributes a dividend to every resident so they can share in the wealth gleaned from the state's natural resources equally. While the successfulness of such initiatives can be analyzed several different ways, Zuckerberg emphasized to graduates the need for metrics that go deeper than standard economic measuresmetrics that can help foster innovation.
