Did you know that Facebook users watch 100 million hours of video every day? It's true. My household accounts for about 30 percent of that number. We like watching kittens, OK? There are more than a billion people using Facebook every day, and video has exploded on the social media platform over the past year. If you're running a business, it's time for you to take notice. Facebook has launched a new program that will enable you to make money from your Facebook videos. According to this report from Recode , the social media giant will soon start testing a "mid-roll" advertising service where you can insert an ad into a video that users can see after they've watched for 20 seconds. Facebook will sell the ads for you and take 45 percent of the revenues. This isn't Facebook's first attempt at video advertising. Back in 2015, companies and publishers were allowed to run standalone ads in a separate video section and, just last year, Facebook opened up mid-roll ads that could be shown in a Facebook Live video.

Facebook has changed the way we read our private messages. Again. In the latest update sure to stir up the user base even if it's just for a little while the social network appears to have ditched the old layout of its desktop website's inbox, replacing it with Facebook Messenger. SEE ALSO: It's now much harder to see if someone edited a Facebook post The move to Messenger, first spotted by TechCrunch , brings even greater uniformity to the overall Facebook user experience. Your inbox on Facebook.com is now identical to your inbox on the Facebook mobile app, the Messenger mobile app and the standalone Messenger website , complete with the chat-friendly options that come along with the service, like built-in emoji, sticker and GIF buttons, along with the more specialized commands, like payment and games. Raspberry Pi's new Compute Module 3 has serious competition coming its way from the maker of the Pine64 board computer. The new SOPINE A64 64-bit computing module is a smaller version of the popular US$15 Pine64 computer. It was announced the same week as the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3, which is a smaller version of the popular namesake board, was released. At $29, the SOPINE A64 roughly matches the price of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3, which ranges from $25 to $30. The new SOPINE will ship in February, according to the website. The SOPINE A64 can't operate as a standalone computer like the Pine64. It needs to be plugged in as a memory slot inside a computer. Your weekly emotion-fest isn't going anywhere: NBC just renewed breakout freshman drama This is Us for not one, but two, new seasons. Each new season will have a minimum of 18 episodes, so that means fans will be getting at least 36 new episodes to cry at/with. SEE ALSO: 'This Is Us' gives us a standalone episode that still breaks our hearts The move isn't a total surprise, as NBC is obviously thrilled with the new show's performance. The drama's ratings typically wins Tuesday nights. Earlier this month, stars of the crowd-pleaser were nominated for multiple Golden Globes, and Sterling K. Brown was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance. Read more... More about This Is Us , Tv , and Entertainment

Make no mistake: The cameras in today's top-of-the-line smartphones can take some absolutely stunning images. The iPhone 7 (and particularly the 7 Plus , with its dual-lens system), the Google Pixel and the Samsung Galaxy S7 , just to name a few examples, are all highly capable shooters. For evidence of that, just take a peek at our iPhone 7 test in Utah's Zion National Park: Yet there is still only so much you can ask of a smartphone camera. Limitations in sensor size, lens technology and other factors mean that, barring some miraculous technological breakthrough, standalone cameras will always be more capable than our smartphones. That's particularly true in challenging conditions, like poorly lit rooms, or if you need a bunch of zoom for, say, shooting your child's soccer game. (The digital zoom on smartphones is effectively a cropping technique that tends to reduce overall image quality, whereas even affordable telephoto lenses for standalone cameras can produce incredible results.

VR porn long ago mastered the sights and sounds of sexy times, but now you can finally experience the smells. A new device called the OhRoma promises to infuse your nose with up to three different sensual aromas at once as you get to virtual business. The OhRoma is a standalone gadget that works with your existing VR headset. It definitely looks kind of like a gas mask but for your pleasure rather than protection. There are three slots for scent cartridges, and there are 30 scents to pick from. The cartridges are heated to release their aromas when the mask is turned on, and the OhRoma app pairs with the mask via Bluetooth, so you can control which smells are released when and at what intensity. As of today, Vine is dead . We knew it was coming, as Vine's parent company (and executioner) Twitter announced the shutdown earlier this month and detailed the standalone platform's transition to a "paired-down" app, Vine Camera, last year . But rather than going gently into the good night, Vine's repetitive viewer experience will live on as Twitter will now automatically loop video content under 6.5 seconds. SEE ALSO: Tech we lost: RIP Vine, Meerkat and the headphone jack TechCrunch first noticed the new functionality, noting that it extends to all video content uploaded to Twitter, even from other platforms like Snapchat. It shouldn't come as a big surprise, though a series of FAQs Vine released to ease users into its new age teased the feature. Read more... More about Death , Video , Vine Is Over , Vine , and Twitter

To that end, while there will be the new investment in covering Trump, the Times is also planning for budget cuts later this year. “Nothing can disguise the fact that the continued shift from print to digital demands a somewhat smaller and more focused newsroom,” Baquet and Kahn wrote. “There will be budget cuts this year. We will lay out the specifics in the coming weeks and months. We cannot pretend to be immune from financial pressures but we view this moment as a necessary repositioning of The Times’s newsroom, not as a diminishment.” Last month the Times announced that it plans to vacate “at least eight floors” in its midtown Manhattan office building, consolidating teams and eliminating standalone offices. Tuesday's memo suggests that the move is just one part of larger cost-saving measures. The 2020 report suggests that copy editors and other editing staffers may be among those whose jobs are on the line, as it shifts investment to newsgathering.

By Omeed Alerasool Of all the policy lessons to take away from 2016, here is a simple one: referendums should not be deciding major changes and reforms in established democracies. A number of world leaders called for national referendums in the past year . They mistakenly thought that linking a major reform or decision to their personal reputations in a standalone vote would help guarantee the desired outcome and result in a stronger political mandate. As these referendums demonstrate, placing a major decision up for a simple "Yes" or "No" vote is unwise, regardless of the specifics of the referendums. Instead of referendums, democratic leaders in established democracies should turn to more traditional routes for reform: specifically, through legislation passed by the parliament or congress. The leaders who have called for such referendums believed that there was a "correct" answer to the binary votes, expecting cooler heads would ultimately prevail.

You know how it goes: hand your iPhone to someone so they can check out an amazing picture you took, and before you know it they're scrolling like a maniac through the entirety of Photos. Stop such rudeness with ShowStopper , an app that enables you to make locked galleries on the fly. You get up to four images at once, but can go unlimited for $0.99/79p. With iBooks on the iPhone, you might wonder why you should bother with Amazon's Kindle . After all, the app's not as pretty as iBooks, nor is there an integrated store (you buy in Safari and sync purchases to the app). However, Kindle offers a massive selection of books compared to Apple's app and the reading experience is great. A great many Today view widgets seem quite gimmicky, but Vidgets provides a great mix of monitoring and utility. The standalone app enables you to add and organise the likes of world clocks, network indicators, and widgets outlining remaining space on your device.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sequels Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has outlined the plans for further Spider-Man projects beyond Homecoming . When asked about the idea of more films in the series, he said “sure”. He added that Spider-Man: Homecoming is “sophomore year, is the next one junior year? Is the next one senior year? Is there a summer break between each of those? I dont know what, but it was sort of how do we do a journey for Peter not dissimilar for what the students of Hogwarts would go through each of their years, which was one of the early ideas we had for the movies”. In conversation with EW , Feige also said that the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie will feature faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that it won't be an entirely standalone film. In spite of the fact that it's a Sony co-production, Spider-Man "is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth".

ONLINE giant Amazon has created its first subscription channel, Anime Strike, in an expansion of its streaming television offerings. The on-demand channel, which features Japanese animation shorts and features, will be available for US$4.99 to Amazon Prime subscribers in the United States. The new channel made its debut this week as other content providers such as HBO and Showtime begin offering standalone online subscriptions which do not require a cable or satellite subscription. The launch comes with Amazon in competition with other streaming TV operators such as Netflix and Hulu in a global market that is shifting away from traditional pay-TV models. Amazon offers a large catalog of films and TV shows, including a number of its original productions, some of which have won awards. — AFP
