But synestias formed from larger or hotter objects such as gas giant planets or stars could potentially last much longer, she says. The synestia structure also suggests new ways to think about lunar formation, Stewart says. Earth's moon is remarkably similar to Earth in composition, and most current theories about how the moon formed involve a giant impact that threw material into orbit. But such an impact could have instead formed a synestia from which the Earth and moon both condensed. Busted moon could put rings around Mars No one has yet observed a synestia directly, but they might be found in other solar systems once astronomers start looking for them alongside rocky planets and gas giants. NASA and the US Department of Energy supported the work. Source: University of California, Davis The post Was Earth once a big spinning doughnut'? appeared first on Futurity .

British Airways said "many" of its IT systems were back up and running Sunday, but travelers still faced cancellations and delays after a global computer failure grounded hundreds of flights. BA chief executive Alex Cruz said the airline was running a "near-full operation" at London's Gatwick Airport and planned to operate all scheduled long-haul services from Heathrow. But he said there will still be delays, as well as some canceled short-haul flights. BA canceled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick Saturday after the IT outage, which it blamed on a power-supply problem. The glitch threw the plans of thousands of travelers into disarray, on what is a holiday weekend in Britain. BA operates hundreds of flights from Heathrow and Gatwick on a typical day — and both are major hubs for worldwide travel. Cruz apologized in a video statement, saying "I know this has been a horrible time for customers.

AUSTIN, Texas ― A potential compromise to avoid a full-blown set of bathroom restrictions keeping trans Texans from using the facilities that most closely match their gender fell apart Friday night, as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) once again implied that hed force legislators to return for a special session if the measure doesnt pass. Patrick has made the issue a priority since the beginning of the regular session, which started in January. But the bill he backed in the state Senate, which would have required trans Texans to use public bathrooms of the sex listed on their birth certificates, failed to gain traction in the state House of Representatives. Instead, House Speaker Joe Straus blocked the measure and threw his support behind an amendment to a separate bill last week as his watered-down alternative. The amendment would have required public and charter K-12 schools ― but not government buildings ― to provide single-use bathrooms to those uncomfortable using facilities of their biological sex.

He said Russell was the one who suggested the robbery. Moore said he wasn't completely on board with robbing someone but "I did it anyway," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. When the cab arrived, Moore said, he was the first to reach the vehicle and he punched Mohamed. Moore testified that the others pulled Mohamed from the cab, threw him to the ground and began kicking and beating him. They then searched him for money or other valuables but found nothing, leaving with only the driver's cellphone and the vehicle's key, he said. Moore's attorney, Kevin Abramovitz, said Mohamed "lost his life in a horrible, horrible set of circumstances." He said he and his client have no deal with prosecutors but they are "certainly anticipating a benefit" from Moore's testimony. Russell's attorney, Robert Carey Jr., said he looks forward to "challenging the credibility of this witness."
