Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, who was once considered the front-runner to replace fired FBI Director James Comey, has formally withdrawn from consideration for the post. In a letter sent Wednesday to President Donald Trump, Lieberman said he wanted to avoid any potential conflict due to Trump’s decision to tap attorney Marc Kasowitz as his primary outside counsel in ongoing investigations into possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. Both Kasowitz and Lieberman work for the same New York firm. “I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this nomination,” Lieberman said in the letter, released by his office. “With your selection of Marc Kasowitz to represent you in the various investigations that have begun, I do believe that it would be best to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest, given my role as senior counsel in the law firm of which Marc is the senior partner.

Representing only 1% of the total mortgage market, it's too early to know whether Home Capital's problems will spread, but already investors are losing what matters most in a highly leveraged business: confidence. On April 26th, the day Home Capital lost 65% of its value, Equitable Group, First National Financial, and Street Capital Group saw their stocks fall 32%, 11%, and 10%, respectively. In the week proceeding, Equitable Group, a mortgage lender that mirrors Home Capital, saw C$75 million worth of deposits withdrawn as their stock fell 39% (5) . Canada's finance minister Bill Morneau has said there is no link between Home Capital and risks in the housing market and Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz has said that Home Capital's problems are idiosyncratic, believing they won't trigger a contagion effect. Are these statements akin to when the chairman of the United States' central bank, Ben Bernanke, said in 2007 that the problems in the subprime market seems likely to be contained (6) ? Already we've seen actions being taken to safeguard contagion from spreading.

So you can have a very much protectionist withdrawn foreign policy and it probably makes no difference to people that get sucked into those ideologies, they will still try to attack.

We are concerned about the lack of implementation of the Minsk agreements. We have seen many, many violations of the ceasefire, and we have seen that heavy weapons are not being withdrawn from the contact line. We are particularly concerned about the international monitoring mission, the OSCE monitors, are not allowed to operate, he said. Answering a question about his evaluation of a decree by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to ban of Russian social networks, the NATO Secretary General said: The Ukrainian government has made clear that this decree to restrict some of the sites is an issue of security, not one of freedom of speech. We see how vulnerable many societies are against cyberattacks. And therefore NATO has significantly increased our own cyber defenses, we are also working with partners countries, including Ukraine, on how we can help them to strengthen their cyber networkscyber defense, he added.

would expect to see troops withdrawn from the street and normal police and carried on by police in the normal way. It is an expedient measure, an important measure, while the threat level is a critical bearing in mind what that means. Some fascinating detail there. Thank you so much for being.

Three men have since been arrested in south Manchester, in addition to a 23-year-old man already being questioned by police. Members of the local Libyan community expressed surprise that the young man they knew as a quiet and withdrawn son of a devoutly religious family was responsible for the attack. "He is such an unlikely person to have done this," a family friend told The Guardian . He added that Abedi's father would be "distraught" at his son's actions. Ramadan Abedi is a well known figure at Didsbury mosque, where he used to sing the call to prayer. "He was always very confrontational with jihadi ideology," the family friend added. "The family will be devastated." However, a neighbour in the Whalley Range area of south Manchester, where the Abedi family lived, told the Daily Telegraph she noticed Salman "acting strangely" in recent months, including chanting Arabic prayers loudly in the street.

On May 19, the city of New Orleans removed a statue of Robert E. Lee from atop an 80-foot pedestal, where it had stood for 133 years. The Confederate Army commander's likeness was the last of four monuments memorializing the insurrection to be withdrawn in a 26-day span, an action that has led to protest both in the city and elsewhere. The same day, Mayor Mitch Landrieu , who started the movement to take down the monuments in 2015, gave a speech explaining the reasoning behind their removal. His full prepared remarks are below. Thank you for coming. The soul of our beloved city is deeply rooted in a history that has evolved over thousands of years; rooted in a diverse people who have been here together every step of the way for both good and for ill. It is a history that holds in its heart the stories of Native Americans the Choctaw, Houma Nation, the Chitimacha.
