I don't think they are particularly challenging songs. They are written for actors rather than musical theatre performers. They made them simpler. It might be remembered for the awards that it has won but as a musical, it won't be up there with the great ones, definitely not.

Its staff certainly put the legwork in. A 3-month Boot Camp to master dancing, singing and, for Ryan Gosling, learning to play jazz piano. The director wanted to shoot the dance sequences of the songs and some of these piano pieces all in one shot, so there was no opportunity to kind of cut in with a proper piano player.
