Mandatory Credit: Presidencia de la Republica de Mexico President of Mexico Pena Nieto stated "we will work for a border that unites us and not one that divides us," in Mexico City, on Monday. SOT, Pena Nieto, President of Mexico (Spanish): "We will work for a border that unites us and not one that divides us. Even if Mexico recognises the rights of all nations, of all sovereign nations to guarantee its own security, Mexico does not believe in walls. Our country believes in bridges, in road junctions and rail crossings and the use of technology as the best allies to boost a good neighborhood. Our border must be our best space of co-existence, an area of security, prosperity and shared development." SOT, Pena Nieto, President of Mexico (Spanish): "We will look for agreements that bring certitude to investment and trade between Mexico, Canada and the US.

In one of her first major appearances of the election year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel outlined her vision for refugee and asylum policy in a speech in Wuerzburg, Monday. Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "And now we are facing a difficult task, but we need to carry out this task. We are a state of law, and in a state of law help and support is given to those who need help. But in order to be able to continue doing so further, we need to say to those who after constitutional proceedings have not been allowed right of residence, that they need to leave our country again. That belongs to the regulation and governing of the process as well. We have learnt together in the politics, that the faster we decide, the better it is for the people concerned. Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "Those who have the right to stay, at least for a designated period of time, the big task is the integration.

Berlin Zoo's very own polar bear cub continued to charm his fans, Monday, even though he has developed teeth sharp enough to bite and tear apart a piece of red meat. Hungry and excited, the little cub proceeded to eat the meat before his motherMama Tonjaserved it for him in the “dining room” enclosure. The mother bear took the meat away and set some ground rules for her son: we eat at the dining table, and not in the kitchen. Head of the Russian delegation in the Astana talks, Alexander Lavrentiev, said that "all the parties have shown reasonable approach" during the first day of the Syrian peace talks in the Kazakh capital, Monday. "At the end [parties] tried to avoid some actions that could lead to the failure of this very important, as we consider it, international event," Lavrentiev stated. Talking about meeting the Syrian opposition, Lavrientiev said that "if at the beginning, the members of the delegation were somewhat under stress, the level of distress significantly decreased." He added that the opposition understood that Russia "is a reliable partner, who remain true to its words and if it guarantees any actions, or guarantees any agreement, you can rely on it". Alexander Lavrentiev, Russia's Special Envoy on Syria (Russian): "I would like to note that despite the fact that at first temperature was high enough, after all the parties have shown reasonable approach, at the end tried to avoid some actions that could lead to the failure of this very important, as we consider it, international event.

The ongoing talks in Astana are "only an intermediate step" in finding lasting peace for Syria, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said at a press statement in Berlin, Monday. SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "The way I see it, is that the ongoing talks in Astana are an intermediate step. You will see that Astana is mostly handling matters of military collaboration between Turkey, Russia, Iran and others who are involved, who engaged in the Syrian war. We are present in Astana as observers and are following it. But it can only be an intermediate step because the political solution for Syria can to my opinion only be found in Geneva in the attendance of the international support group. Because a continuous peace for Syria, a new political perspective for Syria, can only be found if the regional actors, who played a role as neighbours, are also at the table.

In a joint press conference, Hollande congratulated Santos on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize and saving countless lives, and asserted his support to the peace process led by Santos with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas. Francois Hollande, French President (French): "I have also come here to Colombia to celebrate reaching peace, that you have achieved and that you have received the Nobel Prize for. You have my congratulations. It was a brave choice, the one that you made. You have had the spirit to take a step after step to reach this stage. And in reaching this reconciliation, and ending a conflict that lasted for 50 years and saving millions of people, this is a victory for Colombia, because this is peace, this is what is possible.
