In 2016, there were more than 760 homicides in Chicago, the highest figure the city had seen in 30 years. Chicago has four level one adult trauma centers, but not one of them is within 30 minutes of the city’s south side, where most of the murders occur. In an emergency, that distance could mean the difference between life and death. After a decades-long battle, a trauma center is scheduled to open at the University of Chicago next year. Until then, some south side residents are trying to address the problem themselves. Tuesday marks 100 years since the tragic sinking of the SS Mendi, which was ferrying South African soldiers to France during World War 1. More than 600 troops - most of whom were black - died when a large cargo steamship collided with the SS Mendi in the English Channel. They will be remembered during Armed Forces Day celebrations in Durban tomorrow. President Jacob Zuma as the commander in Chief will deliver the main address. More than four-thousand soldiers are expected to parade through the city. Our reporter in Durban, Simphiwe Makhanya, caught up with Major General Luvuyo Nobanda a short while ago, asking him about the preparations for tomorrow's event. US-Mexico border wall: The great wall of America A border of more than 3,000 kilometres separates the US from Mexico - but it is defined not only by physical barriers made of concrete and steel but by an immigration policy which is failing to address the issues behind illegal migration. Despite the US spending billions of dollars on border enforcement, the lure of work sees illegal migrants enter the country at a rate of 850,000 a year. A series of walls along the Mexican border were designed to stem this flow but based on current estimates it has failed. Instead, the walls have re-routed human traffic into remote desert areas where people risk their lives in deadly conditions attempting to enter the US. This film shows what US immigration policy looks like on the ground for the people making the perilous journey for a better life, and for the Americans who call this borderland home.

Donald Trump has once more lambasted the so-called dishonest media. Unusually for a sitting US president, he held an election campaign-style rally in Florida. During his address, he said he wanted to speak to the people "without the filter of fake news." Trump threatened to 'continue to expose them', adding: "When the media lies to people I will never ever let them get away with it, I will do whatever I can that they don't get away with it. They have their own agenda and their agenda is not y… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2017/02/19/trump-re-launches-attack-on-media-at-florida-rally What are the top stories today? Forbes this week ran an article discussing what happens when nobody wants your parents' stuff , and though it doesn't address collector cars, we know well that the old car hobby is a generational one, and that what's popular today (or what was popular with our parents) won't necessarily be in demand tomorrow. The article contains some advice, though we're sure that's only the beginning of the conversation, especially among old car enthusiasts. * The Chicane this week took a brief look at the La Carrera Panamericana races of driver Jacqueline Evans . * The nonprofit that operates Henry and Clara Ford's Fair Lane Estate is in the midst of a full restoration of the estate and hope to reopen it soon with no velvet ropes tours, according to a recent Crain's Detroit article. * One of our commenters pointed us to this British stock car racing compendium , which lists just about every car and driver to compete in the class in the United Kingdom.
