The EU Council President Donald Tusk said he would "not pretend" it was a "happy day" as he commented on UK Prime Minister Theresa May's triggering of Article 50, from Brussels on Wednesday. Tusk brandished the "six pages," "formally starting the negotiations" and said "there is no reason to pretend that this is a happy day, neither in Brussels nor in London, after all most Europeans, including almost half the British voters wish that we would stay together not drift apart." On Wednesday May signed the letter that was later presented to Tusk by British ambassador to the EU Sir Tim Barrow giving formal notice of the UK's desire to leave the EU under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Article 50 allows EU and UK representatives two years to come to a deal on the terms of the UK's exit from the union, with the deadline for the talks set for 29 March 2019.
