Royal Festival Hall, London Nathalie Stutzmann, conducting with great insight, dedicated the evening to victims of the Westminster attack. It is hard to imagine a finer tribute This haunting London Philharmonic concert, part of the Southbank’s Belief and Beyond Belief series , took place “by an irony of fate”, as conductor Nathalie Stutzmann put it, addressing the audience days after the London terror attack , and was dedicated to its victims and their loved ones. Strauss’s Tod und Verklärung and Mozart’s Requiem , both confrontations with mortality, formed the programme, planned long in advance: it would be hard, however, to imagine a finer memorial. “May their souls find solace and appeasement in this offering,” Stutzmann added, visibly upset. As both a singer and a conductor, she is primarily associated with the 18th-century repertoire, but any concerns that Strauss’s depiction of an artist’s death might be out of her comfort zone were dispelled in a performance of great clarity and insight.

Taken within 24 hours, it is about 95% effective. And yes, teenagers can legally purchase it, though Teen Vogue has reported on numerous stores who’ve made it difficult, if not impossible, for shoppers to gain access to the pill. ( The Reproductive Justice Project encourages consumers to help them collect data on whether Plan B is correctly displayed on the shelves as available for sale to any woman of childbearing age.) There’s a helpful football analogy for those who may be a bit slow in understanding that Plan B is indeed a bonafide contraceptive, and not the abortifacient some mistakenly make it out to be. It’s NSFW, but only just, as a team of cartoon penis-outlines push down the field toward the uterine wall in the end zone. The other bills who once stood in line awaiting the president’s signature have been reimagined as sperm, while songwriter Holly Miranda pays tribute to Dave Frishberg ’s lyrics with a pizzazz worthy of the original: I’m just a pill A helpful birth control pill No matter what they say on Capital Hill So now you know my truth I’m all about prevention If your condom breaks I’m here for intervention Join me take a stand today I really hope and pray that you will Drop some facts Tell the world I’m a pill.

2. BURTON WANTED HIS MARTIANS TO BE ANIMATED VIA STOP-MOTION. The concept of a Mars Attacks! movie first surfaced in 1985 , but development wouldnt begin in earnest until 1994, when screenwriter John Gems and director Tim Burton got involved with the project. To bring the aliens to life, Burton intended to utilize stop-motion animation, something he’s “always [loved] and always will.” Early in pre-production, a set of 12-inch articulated Martian models were built for testing purposes. At first, Burton’s plan was to have these animated in front of a blue screen. They would then be inserted digitally onto miniature sets by the artists at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). Ultimately, though, Burton decided to abandon the stop-motion approach when ILM presented him with some impressive screen tests featuring computer-animated aliens. Despite this, Mars Attacks! still pays tribute to the older effects technique.
