The Sleuth is a waterfront fan and bird nerd so you can imagine that the riverside from Attenborough Nature Reserve to Sawley Marina is one of his favourite places. Not least the Trent Lock neighbourhood where the Soar, Erewash Canal and Cranfleet Cut all meet the River Trent. The hostelries at Trent Lock include the cunningly named The Trent Lock, formerly The Trent Navigation, once the last place for boatmen transporting coal from the Derbyshire collieries to enjoy a sly one before turning...

And they want to save money. So behavioral economics, not politics, drove these ESPN layoffs. Internal market research, says one ESPN executive, shows negligible evidence that dissatisfaction with network's politics drove subscribers to tune out or cut the cord. TIME asked a trio of industry experts if politics play a part in ESPN's struggles. None cited any evidence indicating it does. I'm highly skeptical of that thesis, says Joseph Bonner, an equity analyst who covers Disney ESPN's parent company for Argus Research. With good reason. Would a large cohort of die-hard sports fan tune out Monday Night Football, or an NBA playoff games just because the network, on occasion, debates race? As long as ESPN has the games, it will have eyeballs. Politics be damned.

Wrestling fans who were alive and watching WWE programming during the Attitude Era remember the Mean Street Posse and the brightest star of the group Pete Gasparino , better known as Pete Gas. Gas has been retired from the wrestling business for several years, but the story about his entrance into WWE and how he went from having no professional experience to earning a three-year contract never gets old. In a recent interview promoting his new book , Looking at the Lights: My path from Fan to a Wrestling Heel , Gas spoke to Ring Rust Radio about what made the Attitude Era so special, Shane McMahons WrestleMania match against AJ Styles and the recent bullying accusations against John Bradshaw Layfield . Gas was hired by WWE in 1999 as part of the Mean Street Posse, but thanks to the genuine heat they garnered from the fans, they were given three-year contracts.

Once you hear it, it's the only thing that makes sense. So, spoiler alert (Lightning McQueen pun intended): What you're about to read could forever warp the way you look at Cars . Screen Crush editor Matt Singer spoke with Jay Ward, creative director of the Cars world at Pixar, and apparently the author of "The World of Cars Owner's Manual," a top secret internal document at the Disney animation division. SEE ALSO: Lightning McQueen rediscovers his love of racing in the 'Cars 3' trailer Singer didn't get his hands on the Cars bible during a recent press junket, but he did ask its creator for his (very unofficial) theory on how a world of talking cars and no humans to drive them came to be. Back when the 2014 4 Series Convertible debuted, it had optional neck warmers that help keep you toasty with the top down. The neck warmer are no mere gimmick as they blow hot air on the back of your neck and comes with three fan speed settings. On the highest setting the neck warmer does make a little noise from its fan. Given the BMW 4 Series Convertible has heated seats, heated steering wheel and neck warmer, you can easily have the top down in below freezing weather. To drop the hard metal top in the 4 Series convertible, simply press a single button on the middle of the console. The three-piece top jumps up in the air while the trunk deck lid rises up to swallow the pieces of the roof. The convertible top is able to retract while moving at speeds up to 11mph and takes about 20 seconds. We put ours down at a stop light which ended up turning green, so we merely rolled of the line and kept it under 11 mph until its stowing process was complete.

Lee Stern 26 Apr 2017 If there’s a car that’s likely to add fuel to the Porsche fan’s fire it’s this: a 1993 Porsche Carrera RSR 3.8 with only ten kilometres on the clock. Better yet, it’s heading to auction at the RM Sotheby’s, Villa Erba sale this May. Based on the 911 964 generation this end of model life car was one of only fifty-one examples built. The RSR 3.8 was conceived in a similar vein to a current, and much idolised, Porsche offering - the GT3 RS. However it was arguably a much rawer conception even than the modern day track weapon. Image 4 of 24 Image 4 of 24 The RSR’s intended track domain didnt deter the buyer of this version from specifying the opulent CanCan red leather that covers almost all the tactile surfaces in the cabin and is accompanied by matching carpets. The bold colour scheme inside might even explain why the mileage on this example is so incredibly low.

' It's not about the surface stuff. It's about: Are they approaching the game the way he did? That is what it means to be a Michael Jordanto be a Kobe. That is what we should be looking for." Ask DeRozan who he wanted to be growing up in the '90s and 2000s in Compton, California, and the answer is easy: "I watched every single thing Kobe did, Jordan did, and tried to emulate it," he tells B/R Mag. And though MJ's spirit may stir within him, ask DeRozan if there's any vestige of MJ left in today's players and, well: "I don't think so." OVERHEARD AT THE UNITED CENTER at a recent Bulls game, where two fans were admiring a large photographic display: Fan No. 1: "Oh, wow! Look at that guy! He's wearing the original Jordans!" Fan No. 2: "Dude! That is Michael Jordan." Even Pai's fellow GOP commissioner, Michael O’Rielly, who’s no fan of the current rules, expressed some skepticism about obtaining voluntary commitments from private companies. O'Rielly, who spoke at the same event as Pai, made a plea for lawmakers to get involved in the net neutrality issue. The only way to bring resolution to the net neutrality debate once and for all is for Congress to consider and enact legislation on the subject matter, as it deems appropriate, he said. There can be no lasting peace until that happens.

Fans of electric automobiles and BMW enthusiasts alike both agree that BMW needs to do more to stay afloat. Apparently, BMW CEO Harald Kruger feels the same way, as BMW just recently held an event for its employees, attempting to strike fear into them about the electric future. On a giant screen, images of Mercedes', Teslas and Elon Musk flashed with the presenter speaking over them, saying “We’re in the midst of an electric assault,”. Mostly when Musk's face appeared. “This must be taken very seriously.” This is an indication that BMW is very aware of Tesla's capabilities, its loyal fan base and the power it holds in the EV world. While BMW has been slowing down its EV efforts, Tesla has been ramping its up. As BMW loses i Division employees to other brands, Tesla is recruiting new talent. And while BMW is pushing plug-in hybrids, Tesla is building a massive Gigafactory that can produce the world's cheapest luxury EV that can do over 200 miles of pure electric driving.

Director Jonathan Demme, best known for his horror-thriller movie Silence of the Lambs , has died in New York at age 73. He had been battling cancer. My first introduction to Demme's work was his quirky 1986 film Something Wild , about a free spirited young woman (played by Melanie Griffith) who kidnaps an uptight yuppie (played by Jeff Daniels), who then are both held hostage by her creepy thug ex-boyfriend (played by Ray Liotta). I fell in madly love with this film, which turned me into an instant Demme fan. Some of his other brilliant films include Married to the Mob , Philadelphia , The Manchurian Candidate , and his Talking Heads documentary Stop Making Sense . And the list goes on. He was survived by his second wife, Joanne Howard, and their three children, Ramona, Brooklyn and Jos. Our hearts at Boing Boing go out to his family. For more on Demme, here's a write-up by Variety .

Fan Changlong, a vice chairman of China s powerful Central Military Commission, presided over the ceremony, Xinhua said, during which a bottle of champagne was broken on the bow. The launch follows China s celebration on Sunday of the 68th birthday of the founding of the Chinese navy, and comes amid renewed tensions between North Korea and the United States over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. Little is known about China s aircraft carrier program, which is a state secret. But the government has said the new carrier's design draws on experiences from the country's first carrier, the Liaoning, bought second-hand from Ukraine in 1998 and refitted in China . The new conventionally powered carrier will be able to operate China s Shenyang J-15 fighter jets. Unlike the U.S. navy's longer-range nuclear carriers, both of China s feature Soviet-design ski-jump bows, intended to give fighter jets enough lift to take off from their shorter decks.
